Forklift Battery Safety
The power to operate electric lift trucks is provided by big industrial batteries which have to be charged frequently and maintained correctly. Safety measures must be followed while somebody connects the battery to the charger. It is important to check battery fluid levels.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
It is essential for employees working with a forklift battery to wear eye protection. Other PPG include goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The best way to protect clothes and skin from other residue or leaked acid is to wear thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
An emergency eyewash station must be located near the charging place. The route to the station should not be obstructed and an employee who is injured should be able to reach the eyewash post from the charging area in 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The charger and battery should be at the same amperage. It should be turned off when the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open flames are prohibited near a battery and charging area. Never allow items such as lighters or matches to be used while somebody is checking the battery fluid levels.
Ventilation
It is essential to keep the battery charging place properly ventilated. The recharging process can release gas. These fumes are both poisonous and explosive.
